Aquilos CRYO-FIB

Aquilos Cryo-FIB

The Thermo Scientific™ Aquilos™ Cryo-FIB is the first cryo-DualBeam™ system dedicated to sample preparation for cryo-electron tomography. The microscope provides structural and cell biologists a tool that allows them to prepare site-specific regions from vitrified cells and create thin, distortion-free windows into the cell’s interior. Thin cryo-lamella samples prepared by the Aquilos Cryo-FIB are transferred to a cryo-transmission electron microscope (cryo-TEM), where a 3D tomographic dataset is acquired.

This fully free-of-charge platform will feature over 50 hours of theoretical lectures and hands-on demonstration videos, supplemented with tests and evaluations that are a great inroad into this exciting Nobel Prize-winning technique.

Insight into molecular mechanisms in cells is the prerequisite for identifying drug targets as well as potential cures for diseases. Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) is a new label-free, fixation-free method to visualize native protein complexes in frozen cells with unprecedented resolution. Therefore, it provides an unadulterated view into the cell and is the basis for the advancement in understanding of the molecular machinery. Cryo-ET has provided insights into the cellular mechanisms of ALS, Chorea Huntington and Alzheimer’s disease.

The new Lumis EBSD Detector enables ultra-fast collection rates and high-resolution data. About the speaker:

Janice E. Clements, PhD, is an extremely well-respected scientist but has also been in leadership for many years as the vice dean of faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She still runs her own lab (basic science related to HIV/AIDS) in addition to her administrative role. She has long been a champion for advancing women to leadership roles in academic medicine.
